Durrell McDonald pops for DePaul
Tuesday, 24 January 2012

depaul.jpgESPN.com: Class of 2012 combo guard Durrell McDonald committed to DePaul on Monday.

McDonald, who is 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds, visited DePaul's campus over the weekend and informed its staff of his decision before returning home Monday. McDonald attends Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nev.

"It's an extreme weight off my shoulders," McDonald said on Monday night. "Everything was perfect. I still feel like I'm dreaming right now."

McDonald was drawn to DePaul because of its up-tempo style, which he said fits his game perfectly. He's averaging about 21 points this season.

"Their style of play is fast-paced," he said. "That's how I've played with most of the teams I've played on. I feel like I can make a great impact on the program. I feel like I'm the missing piece they need."

Former Purdue commit Derek Willis opts for Kentucky
Friday, 20 January 2012

derekwillis.jpgIndy Star: The toll of the recruiting process was getting to Bullitt East High School junior Derek Willis, talking with college coaches, worrying about who was coming to games and watching and answering the same questions over and over.

After a bad outing last weekend against Ballard, Willis told his family and Bullitt East coach Troy Barr that he needed to make a decision.

And this time, the 6-foot-9 top-30 prospect nationally in the Class of 2013 said it's his final decision. Willis, who committed to Purdue last summer only to later back off that commitment, announced on Friday that he committed to the University of Kentucky.

"It was kind of getting to me and stressing me out," Willis said. "I am glad that I got this off my chest and everybody knows where I am going.

Landon All-Met guard Joe McDonald commits to George Washington
Thursday, 19 January 2012

ImageWashington Post: Landon senior All-Met guard Joe McDonald committed to George Washington on Wednesday, choosing the Colonials over Princeton.

A 6-foot-1 point guard, McDonald is averaging 22 points per game as Landon has started 9-6. Last season, he averaged 17.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and four assists for the Bears en route to a 19-6 record.

McDonald said he felt most comfortable staying in the D.C. area and playing in the A-10.

“What set it apart was the fact that it’s close to home,” McDonald said. “Having old friends around and my mom at every home game was big. And GW plays better competition. No knock to the Ivy League, but they have one big competitor and in the A-10 it’s better [overall].”

John Carroll forward Jarred Jones discusses his commitment to Loyola
Thursday, 19 January 2012

ImageBaltimore Sun: Something about Jarred Jones’ official visit to Loyola this week felt very familiar to the John Carroll forward.

Jones, a 6-foot-6, 185-pound senior, had made unofficial trips to the school before, but it wasn’t necessarily the surroundings that triggered memories. It was his potential teammates.

“I knew most of the players on the team and already had a connection with them,” Jones said Wednesday. “It’s more like a family.”

Playing for a Baltimore Catholic League contender in John Carroll and an AAU power in Nike Baltimore Elite, Jones frequently played against or with some of the state’s top high school players. Greyhounds coach Jimmy Patsos has made it a top priority to add as many of those players as he can to his roster. On Wednesday, Jones joined his friends and former rivals by becoming Loyola’s latest in-state commitment.

A few weekends ago we travelled over to West Orange High School in West Orange New Jersey for The Hoop Group Tip-off Showcase.  There were five games played on Sunday and featured some of the top teams and talent in New Jersey.

For the third game of the day, St. Joseph's Metuchen went up against Teaneck in what proved to be a pretty even matchup.  The final score was 53-49 with Teaneck coming out on top.

Game four featured two teams loaded with Division-I talent with St. Anthony's competing against Trenton Catholic.  St. Anthony's however had the look of a superior team throughout the contest and won convincingly 53-33.

In the final game of the day, St. Benedict's simply had too much firepower for Roselle Catholic and ended up winning by 22 points 70-48.  We only stayed for the first half of this one.

The following are player evaluations from the final three games of this event.

Derrick Randolph commits to Fresno State
Tuesday, 17 January 2012

fresnostate.jpgIllinois Prep Bulls-eye: There is no question that Derrick Randolph has had a lot to overcome, especially in the past year.  However, it now looks as though the 5'7 point guard is starting to have good things come his way.  Those good things have culminated with Randolph verbally committing to Fresno State University and head coach Rodney Terry.  Randolph chose the Bulldogs over interest from Colorado State, Fordham and Louisiana Tech among others.

To put it bluntly, last year was a nightmare for Randolph.  For all practical purposes he did not play whatsoever at Whitney Young during the 2010-11 high school season and there was even a stretch where he wasn't even in school.  He then left Whitney Young this past spring.  Since that time Randolph has faced numerous hurdles as he has attempted to transfer to a number of different schools and battled issues surrounding eligibility.

After leaving Whitney Young, Randolph attempted to transfer to Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago.  But Randolph quickly changed his mind and it was then thought that he might end up at Hyde Park along with several other transfers who planned on playing for Lamont Bryant.  That did not work out either and Bryant has since resigned as the varsity boy's basketball coach at Hyde Park.
