Max Kenyi
This weekend, some of the DC area’s top teams collided at Catholic University for the High School Basketball Championship. CAA Insider was on hand for Saturday’s action. Here is a look at some of the top performers.

Gonzaga

Max Kenyi (2008, 6-4 175 SG/SF)
Max was fantastic in this contest. With the depth on his AAU team, he’s only shown glimpses of what he can do. On this afternoon though, he brought out the whole package. Max is a wiry guard who plays like he has springs in his shoes. He gets off the floor in a hurry and also gets to the hoop quickly with his long strides. As if it wasn’t obvious by now, he can score around the bucket and also out in transition. Max compliments that portion of his game with a very smooth jumper. Today he was hitting consistently from the perimeter and mid range areas (that hasn’t always been the case in past viewings). He added in a couple nice passes and a blocked shot to go with his scoring ability. Max would benefit from adding weight, but his combination of quickness and athletic ability won’t make it as necessary as it would with other guards. Max looks to be a fantastic mid major guard.

Cameron Johnson (2008, 6-4 SG)
This big bodied guard had a solid outing. Because of his size he’s very tough to keep from scoring when he gets into the paint. He handles the ball fairly well and can get to the basket. Cameron also rebounded in this contest.

Ian Hummer (2009, 6-6 SF)
Ian is a good sized young wing player. He has a smooth stroke and can hit from the perimeter. He ran the floor well and scored in transition. He also rebounded well.

Tyler Thornton (2010, 6-1 SG)
Tyler is a young freshman who is certainly worth keeping an eye on. He scored several times in transition, but also showed the ability to knock down the three point shot. Tyler added in a nice drive and dish as well.

National Christian Academy

David Diakite (2008, 6-6 SF)
David is an explosive wing player. He caught the crowd’s attention early with a vicious throw down. He can get to the bucket rather quickly. On one play, he drove left then crossed back over and finished with his right hand. In the second game, David found his stroke from the outside. He buried a very difficult pull up mid range jump shot. He also showed he can hit from three. David had a solid pair of games on the boards and blocked a shot as well.

Dante Taylor (2009, 6-8 PF)
Dante is a very gifted young interior player. He has great hands and gets good positioning, making it easy for him to score in the post. He showed an array of moves including a short bank shot, a baseline jumper and a hook shot. Dante did miss a few easy baskets in the second outing, but was still pretty dominant. He was a monster on the boards and blocked several shots. Dante also handles pretty well for his size. He is definitely a talented young prospect.

Rico Winston (2009, 6-6 SF)
Rico is another skilled forward. He possesses very long arms which are beneficial when he shoots over the defense. He has a smooth stroke from the perimeter and hit several threes over the course of two games. Rico can also handle the rock and either dishes the ball off or score. He attacks the hoop in a straight line and can finish.

Wilbur O' Neal (2008, 6-7 220 PF)
Wilbur is a beast on the boards and that where most of his damage was done on this day. He rebounded very well on both ends. Most of his points came in that fashion as his touches on the interior were rather limited. He is a powerful player who possesses good touch around the hoop though.

Jason West (2009, 6-3 SG)
Jason has good size for a shooting guard. He hit a tough step back three early in the second contest and seemed to gain confidence from there. From that point on, he hit several three point attempts. Throughout the two games, he was somewhat streaky from the outside though. Jason is clearly most comfortable with his jumper, but he can also handle the ball. His ball handling skills will need improvement as he moves forward, but for right not they are effective enough.

Bishop O' Connell

Frank Ben-Eze (2008, 6-10 PF/C)
Frank dominated early in his game and never looked back. He is so strong and athletic that it has to make college coaches drool. He had a monster dunk in this contest and dominated on the glass. Another thing to love about his game is that not only is he aggressive, but he also plays with a lot of energy. He looks like he wants to dominate and not every talented player has that mentality. Frank continued to struggle with his touch on the interior though. On some plays it looks fine, but at other times he puts too much on the ball. Once Frank puts it all together, he’ll be an amazing player to watch.

Jason Clark (2008, 6-2 170 PG/SG) Committed to Georgetown
Jason is a terrific open court player. He can flat out elevate and that was on display with a monster dunk in traffic early on. He combines great athletic ability with amazing speed. He also likes to jump the passing lanes on the defensive end. Jason was good attacking off the dribble in the half court setting. He was quiet from the perimeter though.

Kevin Jones (2009, 6-5 SG/SF)
Kevin is a skilled, young left-handed skilled wing. He loves the mid range jump shot and is very proficient at it. He can either hit set shots from that area or pull up. Kevin finishes well around the hoop. Despite being a lefty, he often gets to the rim by driving right. Kevin can run the floor and score in transition as well.

Kendall Marshall (2010, 6-1 PG)
It is a lot of fun to watch a young kid that plays under control as well as Kendall does. He’s a good size point guard who distributes the ball to his talented teammates. He’s also a very good shooter himself. Kendall gets to the hoop by attacking straight ahead. He isn’t a dynamic ball handler or super athlete, but is still an incredibly productive player. Because he is already well developed, his upside isn’t as high as a lot of players in his class, but Kendall still has a bright future ahead of him.
