DC High School Basketball Championship (Part 2)
Monday, 11 June 2007

By Brian Crownover

{mosImage}Here is a look at the remaining standout players from the DC High School Basketball Championship this past weekend.

Bishop McNamara

Marc Hill (2008, 5-9 PG)
Marc is an undersized, but quick point guard. He’s a fantastic ball handler who blows by the defense. He is able to get into the lane and finish among the trees. Marc also possesses good court vision and can setup teammates.  He loves to push the ball and get out on the break. As if those portions of his game weren’t tough enough to stop, Marc’s pull up game was fabulous as well. He can stop on a dime and buried several shots from three point range. Marc had an excellent all around game. The only knock on him would be his height.

Talib Zanna (2009, 6-9 PF)
Talib is an athletic big man that is still developing on the offensive end.  He is a very good shot blocker and a monster on the boards.  During this game, most of his points came from offensive rebounds and put backs.  He’s an effective finisher.  Talib does need to show more of a back to the basket offensive game.

Rashad Whack (2009, 6-2 SG)
Rashad is a quick ball handling guard. He has a solid build and can get into the lane and finish. Rashad also possesses a good pull up mid range jump shot.

Oxon Hill

Maurice Creek (2009, 6-3 185 SG)
Maurice is a talented shoot first guard. He’s is most comfortable shooting from behind the arc. He can hit from the perimeter by using either a pull up game or a set shot. Maurice was also aggressive driving to the hoop throughout the day. He’s not super quick, but is still effective at getting to the rim. Maurice does need some work on dribbling with his left hand. He can go left, but usually crosses back over to his right hand after the first dribble. Maurice also hit a nice floater in one game too. He was injured in the second game, but showed his toughness by coming back into the game. He can score with relative ease and there are times that he should look for his offense even more. Maurice is a gifted guard.

Lamont Duncan (2008, 6-7 PF)
Lamont is a solid face up forward. He has a nice handle and possesses a fairly smooth jumper. He can hit from deep, although not from beyond the arc. Lamont has good hands and uses them to pull down boards. The athletic forward was quite impressive blocking shots, particularly against National Christian Academy. He also played well in transition. He was somewhat neutralized by NCA’s talented front line in the second viewing. He could benefit by adding more of a back to the basket game. Lamont does look like a solid prospect though.

Lakeem Duncan (2010, 6-5 PF)
Lakeem is a face up left handed forward. He has good size for such a young player. He has a nice handle and showed it on one play where he drove right and came back left to finish. Lakeem possesses a good set of hands, which help him on the boards. He does take outside shots from time to time, but his form could use some improvement. Lakeem can also uses his size to pass over the defense. He is a talented young prospect.

Progressive Christian Academy

Ernest Watson (2008, 6-7 SF)
With some players, it’s amazing to see the difference when they play on their high school team rather than with a loaded AAU team. Ernest plays on a talented Triple Threat team and was somewhat quiet the other week at the Southern Invitational. On Saturday in DC, he was fanastic. He opened with a finger roll lay-up after driving to the basket. Ernest is a solid ball handler, although he could use some improvement in that area. He also showed a very good back to the basket game. Ernest knocked down several turn around jumpers in the low block and certainly favors that move. He was very good on the boards and blocked several shots as well. The athletic wing can get out and score in transition. He does need some work on his jumper though. Ernest looks to be a good mid level prospect.

Eric Moore (2008, 6-7 SF)
Eric is an athletic wing player. He can get into the lane and finish, including with his left hand. He threw down an impressive dunk in this contest. He also hit a nice bank shot around the basket. Eric can shoot the three ball as well.

Gwynn Park

Sean Thomas (2008, 6-3 SG)
Sean is a strong, skilled guard. He finishes well around the rim because of his size. During his game, he had an old fashioned three point play. Sean is a solid ball handler, but isn’t super quick or explosive with the ball in his hands. In this game, he played point guard a lot, but is much more suited for the shooting guard role. Sean opted to score mostly by driving, but he can also step outside and hit the three. He also rebounded very well.

Friendship Charter

Alvin Brown (2008, 6-9 PF/C)
Alvin is long, lean big man. He’s athletic and combines that with some solid skills. He has the ability to knock down the mid range jumper and really seems to like that shot. Alvin also can post up some, although that area of his game could use improvement. He did have a nice short turnaround jumper in the paint. His most impressive play off the day was a follow up dunk against Bishop O’ Connell. Like the rest of his teammates, he struggled to contain O’ Connell’s talented big man. Alvin also rebounded well and blocked a couple of shots. He would benefit from added weight. Alvin looks to be a big man with some upside though.

Cardinal Gibbons

Perry Wright (2008, 6-3 SG)
Perry is a solid guard who likes to drive to the hoop. The long guard can also hit the three point shot, although he was inconsistent from the outside. He struggled some with turnovers as well. I saw Perry last fall and thought he played well. I was hoping he would play better than he did on Saturday afternoon. He still did play a decent game though.
