Brandon Romain
The New York City Public League quarterfinals took place at St. John's University on Saturday.  CAA Insider took in the action.  Here's a look at some of the top performers.

Scores:

Thomas Edison 80 Wadleigh 68
Boys & Girls 68 Campus Magnet 50

Thomas Jefferson 61 Cardozo 55
Lincoln 70 JFK 53

Boys & Girls

Clayton Sterling (2008, 6-1 PG/SG)
Clayton opened and finished strong in this big victory. He hit a runner and buried two early threes. He possesses a smooth stroke. He got up and down the court and scored numerous transition baskets. Clayton keyed the Kangaroo's big come from behind victory, including burying another three pointer. He can get into the lane off the dribble as well. Clayton led Boys & Girls with a big 24 point output.

Brandon Romain (2008, 6-2 SG)
This smooth lefty can score. He buried a couple perimeter jumpers. He also can get into the lane off the dribble. Brandon can drive and score in either direction. He had a very impressive drive right and finish with that hand. He hit a right handed floater too. He finishes well around the rim. The shooting guard finished with 14 points for this balanced squad.

David Imes (2008, 6-6 210 SF/PF)
David’s production in this one was solid despite his offensive touches being limited. He had a couple offensive rebound put backs. He was a master of the glass throughout the game. David did score on a nice turnaround jumper in the post on one of his few touches. He has some pretty nice skills. When we saw David in the summer, he played a fantastic all around game including hitting a couple three pointers. In this one, he struggled with his jumper. He is an undersized post player, therefore showing more consistency from the perimeter would definitely elevate his stock.

Cyril Reid (2008, 6-4 200 SF)
Cyril made a couple of excellent hustle plays. He had an offensive rebound follow up and also battled on the boards throughout. He has a solid build and that helped him on the glass. Cyril had a nice drive left and lay-up. He added in four free throws among his 12 total points.

Lincoln

James Padgett (2009, 6-8 C)
James was quiet the first time we saw him because Lance Stephenson went off. With Lance being rather quiet, it was James’ time to shine. The talented post player did just that. He was a monster around the rim. He had an athletic offensive rebound jam to go along with several other dunks. He had a left handed tip in. James owns a nice set of hands and he finishes well on the inside. He made most of his impact with those follow-up type plays. He rebounded very well on both ends. James also mixed in an athletic block. He had a couple nice passes too, including out of the post. He has good size as well. James did score mostly on face up plays and could benefit by showing more of a back to the basket low post game. He led Railsplitters with 17 points.

Vincent Council (2008, 6-0 PG)
Vincent did a good job of driving and dishing. He really looked to get his teammates involved. He has a decent handle, but actually could improve in that area.

Justin Greene (2008, 6-6 PF)
Justin did most of his damage on the glass. He pulled down quite a few rebounds and also scored on a put back. He converted on a three point play. Justin’s offensive touches were limited though.

Darwin "Buda" Ellis (2009, 5-9 PG)
Darwin scored early on a transition lay-up. He has a smooth stroke and buried a pair of three pointers. He did miss a couple other jumpers though. He also had a beautiful pass. Darwin was somewhat quiet until late in this one, but he did finish with 10 points in the victory.

Thomas Jefferson

Keith Spellman (2009, 6-2 SG)
Keith is a thin guard who can score. He opened with a deep pull up jumper. He possesses a pretty good pull up game thanks to a quick trigger. Keith makes quick moves offensively. He can get into the lane off the dribble and changes directions well. He had a beautiful stop and go move as well as a crossover. Keith also showed his athletic ability with a transition dunk. He does have a smooth jumper, but was a bit inconsistent on the perimeter. Keith also plays a lot of one on one and would help his team out by passing the ball more. He ended with 11 points in this comeback win.

Thomas Edison

Allan Thomas (2008, 6-3 PG/SG)
Allan isn’t the flashiest player, but this guard just produces. We arrived late and he already had quiet a few points. He’s a straight ahead dribbler who can get to the rim. He got up and down the floor and scored often in transition. He had several nice passes to his teammates as well. Among his baskets were a transition dunk and knocking down a short jumper. Allan led the way in this upset with 25 points.

Wadleigh

William Harrison (2008, 6-5 SG/SF)
William is an explosive scorer. We got to the game late and he already had put up quite a few points. He didn’t stop there though. William scored in numerous ways. He buried a deep jumper, banked in an offensive rebound follow-up, as well as a beautiful old fashioned three point play.  He’s a fantastic ball handler who can get into the lane with ease. The lanky wing has a great pull up game too, including out to three point range. He had an outstanding 35 point explosion, but that still wasn’t enough for Wadleigh.

Curtis Loving (2008, 6-5 SF)
Curtis certainly has some explosive ability. He had a high flying follow-up dunk. He’s such a fantastic leaper that the play looked effortless. Curtis also had a couple explosive drives to the hoop. He gets to the rim quickly. He does need to improve defensively and also would benefit by showing more from the outside.

Campus Magnet

Mennon Chavis (2008, 6-3 SG/SF)
Mennon has a very good pull up game. He hit a couple runners in the lane. While he did get into the lane, his ball handling isn’t the smoothest and could use improvement. Mennon does possess good size. He scored 16 points, but was quiet in the 2nd half.

Kyle O' Quinn (2008, 6-8 PF)
Kyle is a big forward who battles inside. The senior was a rebounding machine. He was solid offensively as well. He had a lay-in off of a nice feed. He scored on a transition dunk. Kyle also stepped outside and buried a 17 foot jumper. He can handle the ball some too, although he won’t look to beat his man in that fashion. He also added a nice high post pass. Kyle was somewhat inconsistent finishing and didn’t show a lot of a back to the basket game. He was productive though and finished with 10 points.

Cardozo

Trinity Fields (2008, 6-1 PG/SG) Committed to Iona
Trinity exploded out of the gate in this one. He helped lead the Judges to an early lead. He hit on a three from behind the arc, including a very difficult one fading left. Trinity had a three point play as well during his big 14 point first quarter. Following that quarter he sputtered. Great defense by Jefferson held him in check and Trinity forced several shots throughout the remainder of the contest. He missed a number of outside jumpers and a few runners in the lane. He bricked the front end of a one and end. As Trinity went so did Cardozo. He finished with just 16 points after the big start and the Judges lost their lead and the game.

Edy Toussaint (2008, 6-3 SF)
Edy had a very quiet game. He was in early fouled trouble and never really got into rhythm. He’s a forward with a solid frame. Edy scored a transition basket and knocked down a pair of free throws. After Trinity was slowed down, Cardozo needed someone to step up and nobody did. Instead, Edy ended with only 6 points in the loss.
