Next week is the start of the live period.  Before that action gets started, CAA Insider decided to head over to the Girard College Summer League to take in the action.  Some top Philly area high schools teams were on hand.  Here is a look at some of the top players.

Bartram

Tyrone Garland (2011, 5-11 PG)
Tyrone is quick ascending his way up the ladder and asserting himself as one of the top guards in Philadelphia. This evening he showed exactly what makes him so special. He almost single-handedly beat a talented All-Stars squad. Tyrone scored 36 points in the victory and was virtually unguardable. The springy guard can get into the lane with ease off the dribble. He changes directions and makes adjustments with such grace. His not the biggest guard, but Tyrone is very tough to stop when he's on. He loves shooting runners and pull up jumpers. Those are two shots which are very tough to defend. He's very good at attacking left and quickly switching the ball to his right hand for a finger roll finish. He did this several times. Tyrone also went directly at shot blocker Malcolm Gilbert (see below) and converted with a scoop finish. Tyrone had a stellar pull up game on this night. He hit shot after shot of that variety from all over the court. He has a pretty quick release.

Tyrone is certainly a score first guard, but he can setup his teammates too. He seems to have good vision and really likes making long passes in the open court. He doesn't look to dish off in half court sets once he starts attacking though. Tyrone does tend to force difficult shots from time to time. He also nearly hurt his team late in the game when they had the lead and he looked to push the ball rather than settle the offense down. It's hard to fault this playmaker for wanting to make something happen though. Tyrone will be participating in Reebok's All American Camp next week and if he plays anything like he did this week, he'll give fits to some of the nations best guards.

Prep Charter

Ferg Myrick (2009, 6-5 SF)
Ferg is probably the most complete wing player in the area. He has the ability to attack off the dribble as he showed on an old fashioned three point player. He can step outside and knock down the three point shot. Ferg also runs the floor well and showed his athletic ability on a transition dunk. He also did the same on a blocked shot. Not only that, but he can score in the post too. Ferg used a spin move to the left and a bank shot to finish on the interior. He grabbed a few rebounds too in this strong outing.

Ameen Tanksley (2011, 6-4 SF)
This big wing is very talented. The lefty had several nice drives to the hoop with fouls. He loves to attack from the right off the bounce. He had a good drive left and banked home a shot too. Ameen hit several three pointers. Although his shot isn’t the prettiest, he’s effective with it. He possesses good size for his age and will only get even better as time roles along.  Ameen will likely be a household name before it’s all said and done.

Shaquille Duncan (2010, 6-8 PF)
Shaq did most of his damage on the glass. The athletic forward also blocked a shot and had a monster jam. He threw a couple nice passes too. He struggled some to finish on the interior. That’s an area where getting stronger will really elevate his game.

Chuck Harris (2009, 6-7 PF)
This lanky and athletic big man made a few plays. Chuck can put the ball on the floor some and attack from the perimeter. He drew several fouls when doing so in this one. He also moves well without the ball. Chuck doesn’t make enough plays around the hoop though. He doesn’t look to post up too often. He’d also great benefit from some added strength.

All-Stars

George Harper (2010, 6-7 PF)
This strong and athletic forward had several nice short drives and finishes around the rim. He uses his body well to finish inside and can overpower smaller players. George had a strong game on the boards too. He had a nice pass on the interior to a fellow big man as well.

Malcolm Gilbert (2010, 6-10 PF/C)
Malcolm is a young big man who is just oozing with potential. Right now, his skill level is still playing catch up though. He's extremely long and athletic. He's best defensively where he blocks shot after shot. Malcolm also cleared rebound after rebound. His touches on the inside were limited, but he didn't make the most of them either. He did score several baskets around the rim, but missed on a few as well. Malcolm will need to get stronger and add some more post moves to his arsenal. If he can do that, he'll really see his stock rise.

Shannon Givens (2009, 5-10 PG
Shannon had a solid, but not spectacular game. He had several nice passes, including one after driving to the basket. His best play was an impressive pull up three pointer with a defender in his face. Shannon also banked home a shot after an offensive rebound. For as much as he touched the ball from the point guard position, we would’ve liked to have seen him making more plays in the offense.

Scotland

Byron Johnson (2009, 6-6 SF/PF)
Byron is very intriguing prospect. This forward stands out right away with his strength, long arms and athletic ability. He can play both inside and outside. On the perimeter, he’s got a solid handle and can get by defenders off the bounce. He can hit jumpers from time to time. On the inside, he’ll often outmuscle people. Byron banked home a hook shot in the post with contact and converted an old fashioned three point play. Where he does need to improve on the interior is to finish more consistently. He doesn’t seem to possess good touch around the basket and isn’t the most fluid player inside. Byron did rebound well and blocked several shots too. He is someone to keep an eye on.

Boys Latin Charter

Maurice Watson (2012, 5-4 PG)
This small, young point guard is really a playmaker. He’s a quick ball handler who can get into the lane off the dribble. He showed he can both score and pass the ball. Maurice hit on several jumpers from the outside, including ones of the pull up variety. He can attack in either direction off the dribble. Maurice proved to be a good setup man too. He’s showed an excellent feel for the game as well as good vision in finding his teammates. Right now, the only major knock on him would be his size, but the youngster has time to grow.

Engineering & Science

Marcus Brown (2009, 6-3 SF)
Marcus doesn't stand out right away as a prospect. As the game wore on he just simply produced. He's comfortable both on the interior and outside. His best asset was his fantastic hands which he used to pull down rebound after rebound. Marcus scored inside on several occasions, including one play in which he was fouled. He showed that he's a pretty smooth ball handler as he attacked several times off the bounce, including a finger roll finish. Because of his size, he'll have to show some more skills from the perimeter than he did in this one, but Marcus certainly proved to be a player during this game.
