The playoffs got under way in the Girard College Summer League on Tuesday evening.  Upsets were the story of the evening.  After going unbeaten in the regular season, Imhotep Charter was stunned by the Edison Owls.  On the opposite court, Franklin Learning Center knocked off Prep Charter.  CAA Insider was there taking in the action.  Here is a look at some of the best players of the evening.

Girard College

John Johnson (2011, 6-0 PG/SG)
Early on in this one, it looked like the host school would become another victim on this day of upsets. Talented guard John Johnson made sure not to let that happen though. In the beginning of the game Lamar Gary (see below) got into John's head and the two jawed back and forth. Once he settled in though, John showed exactly why he one of the best prospects around. The lightning quick guard gets to the rim quickly. He had a pair of three point plays, including a nice drive and scoop finish with contact. John runs the floor very well and if you don't get back on defense, he'll make you pay. He displayed his fine shooting ability in this one too as he dropped a number of three pointers. The most impressive shot was to end the first half from near mid court. John also showed to be a very capable setup man as he made fine pass after fine pass (although his teammates didn't always finish). He possesses great vision.

Rakeem Christmas has had a strong summer and is really going to challenge John for the top spot in the Class of 2011 in the Philadelphia area. It's pretty clear though that John isn't going to give that up without a fight. The gifted lead guard was dominant as his team overcame a double digit deficit to pull out the win.

Torrell Candelaria (2010, 6-2 PG/SG)
Torrell is another blazing quick guard for the Cavs. He's a good ball handler who has a very nice crossover move. Torrell was at his best setting up his teammates. He had several fine drive and dish plays. He also drew some fouls and ran the floor fairly well. He did struggle with his shot from beyond the arc though.

Franklin Learning Center

Denzel Yard (2009, 6-0 PG)
Denzel was the catalyst for one of the biggest upsets of the day. FLC knocked off Prep Charter behind a strong performance from Denzel. The talented lefty really ran the floor. He scored transition basket after transition basket. Denzel adjusts and finishes well in traffic. He had a scoop finish after a foul on one play and converted an old fashioned three point play on another. Denzel drew a number of fouls with his quick ball handling and desire to get up and down the court. He showed that he's a good shooter from the outside too. He did burry a couple jumpers, even though he was inconsistent from deep. Denzel had a beautiful spin move into a fall away mid range jumper on one occasion. The small guard really surprised us with his ability to elevate on a dunk. Denzel proved he was quite talented in this upset victory.

Prep Charter

Ferg Myrick (2009, 6-5 SF)
Ferg was efficient in this one. He was solid from the outside as he hit on a three pointer and another deep two. He attacked off the dribble and finished around the rim as well. Ferg hit the boards on both ends in this contest. He's got a good set of hands which help him in that department. He wasn't dominant, but Ferg was solid in the loss.

Shaquille Duncan (2010, 6-8 PF)
Shaq had his moments in this one. He got up and down the floor and scored several transition baskets. He showed some of his face up game as he hit on a ten foot jumper. Shaq had a nice pass to a cutter on one play. He was strong on the boards as well.

Ameen Tanksley (2011, 6-4 SF)
This talented youngster was solid. Ameen was fairly effective driving to the rim. He drew a couple fouls and also dished off a nice pass. He could improve at the foul line though. Ameen was also quiet from the perimeter.

Bodine

Lamar Gary (2009, 6-3 SG)
Lamar was a surprise player in this close loss. He got into it with John Johnson early on, but Lamar did prove he can play too. He showed his ability to stroke the ball from the perimeter as he hit on a pair of three pointers and a pull up jumper. Lamar is a quick ball handler too. He had a fine drive and dish play and scored after attacking another time. Lamar has good hands and he used them to pull down a few boards. He was also very aggressive defensively against John. Lamar didn't stop John, but he was solid. He showed a nice game on both ends of the floor.

Bartram

Tyrone Garland (2011, 5-11 PG)
We caught the first half of this game and Tyrone really struggled. When his pull up game is on, there are few better players around than him. Tyrone can be streaky and score in bunches. On this night though, he was missing shot after shot. He was effective attacking the rim on a couple plays. Although he's more of a scorer than a setup man, Tyrone did throw a nice pass too.

Engineering & Science

Marcus Brown (2009, 6-4 SF)
This past weekend went pretty well for Marcus. While he was solid in this game, his team really struggled and they were blown out. Marcus scored a couple times in the lane. The lefty banked home a very impressive right handed runner in the lane. From the perimeter, he stepped outside and knocked down a mid range jumper. Marcus used his good hands to corral a couple rebounds too.

All Stars

Malcolm Gilbert (2010, 6-10 PF/C)
During the time we were watching, Malcolm showed his athletic ability with a dunk in transition as well as a blocked shot. He also drew a foul on the inside, but missed on a deep jumper from just inside the arc.
