Paul VI vs. Roman Catholic

In the second game of the DTLR National High School Hoops Festival, Paul VI Catholic High School of Fairfax, Virginia took on Roman Catholic High School of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Both of these teams are led by players headed to big name teams, with Roman’s Maalik Wayns committed to Villanova and Erik Green for Paul VI committed to Virginia Tech.

These were not however the only talented players in the game as a number of other individuals played key roles in the game’s outcome.

While this game was close throughout, Paul VI accumulated a small lead late in the game and hit their free throws to preserve the lead.  They ended up winning the game by 6 points.

Here are the player evaluations from the second game.

Paul VI

Erick Green (2009, 6-2 PG) committed to Virginia Tech
Green is a silky smooth guard who can create his own shot and has range out beyond the three point line.  He also handles the ball well and can shoot off the dribble.  Whenever his team needed a bucket he seemed to find a way to score.  Green was named the game’s MVP after his strong performance.

Raven Barber (2009, 6-7 PF) committed to Mount St. Mary’s
When I saw Raven over the summer he did not do whole a lot offensively but I was still intrigued by the little I saw.  I thought he would do more with his high school team, but he came in off the bench and again did not do much offensively.  The only time I remember him scoring was on a wide open lay up as a result of him cherry picking.  Raven did show a nice drop step in the post on a two separate occasions, but he missed the ensuing hook shot once and the other time was whistled for traveling.   I think Raven is a better player than he showed in this game but he needs to get more aggressive offensively.

Blake Bozeman (2010, 6-0 PG/SG)
Bozeman put on an impressive shooting display in this one.  He hit on four shots from behind the arc. Bozeman also hit all four of his free throw attempts late in the game to keep pushing the lead back up, effectively preventing any late game heroics from Roman Catholic.

Roman Catholic

Maalik Wayns (2009, 6-1 PG) committed to Villanova
There was not a player on the court who could stay in front of Maalik in this game, but that is usually the case with him.  He is extremely quick, strong and is an amazing ball handler.  Maalik attacked the hoop frequently and really created easy opportunities for his teammates to score.  The crowd was very entertained by his myriad of no look passes.  Maalik also finished well when taking it all the way to the basket.   At times Maalik did try to do too much with the ball and this resulted in more turnovers than we are used to seeing from him.  He also struggled with his jump shot throughout the game and really never found his range.

Koron Reed (2009, 6-6 SF/PF)
Koron was extremely active in this game on both sides of the ball.  Defensively he blocked a pair of shots and did a great job pulling down rebounds.  Most of his points were scored right around the hoop.  He had some put backs after pulling down offensive rebounds.  Koron was also able to score after receiving passes in the paint, including a short bank shot and a one handed shot over his defender.  He also had two impressive reverse lay ups.

Rakeem Brookins (2010, 5-11 PG)
This was not a huge game offensively for Rakeem but he did knock down a pair of threes and also hit a pull up mid range jumper.  When he defended Eric Green, Rakeem did a great job of keeping Eric in front of him and forced him to take difficult shots.

Anthony Mayo (2010, 6-7 PF)
Anthony is a long interior player with good leaping ability and he utilized these attributes to effectively crash the boards.  He was able to score after grabbing offensive rebounds but did not do too much else offensively.
