Wiegmann signs to play for Albany
Saturday, 19 May 2012

ImageBND: With the poise which made him one of the top players both at Central and Southwestern Illinois College, David Wiegmann came through under pressure again late Wednesday.

A former all-state forward at Central and all-Region 24 player at SWIC, Wiegmann signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at the University of Albany in New York beginning with the 2012-13 season.

While players can still accept scholarship offers, NCAA Division I and Division II letters of intent have to be signed and accepted by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Wiegmann faxed the letter at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

"Actually, they (Albany) didn't offer me until about 4:30 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday). I went out and had two really good workouts. I got off the plane, knowing that it seemed right and the place that I wanted to go and we faxed the letter with about 30 minutes to spare," Wiegmann said. "I thought about it and where I thought I could be happy. Albany just felt right. The coaches, the school, everything."

“A lot of people said I shouldn’t go to a prep school, go Division II,” he recalled. “I chased my dreams.”

And after a stellar season at PSA, he achieved them. Lawton verbally committed to Maine on Friday, choosing the America East program over Norfolk State.
