Quaker City Shootout (Part 1)

The inaugural Quaker City Shootout was held this past weekend in Philadelphia to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer. In the 16 & under division it was a battle of local teams as Hunting Park defeated the Raiders 54-53. Philly 3 on 3 took home another championship for the “City of Brotherly Love” as they defeated Team Odom 70-67 in the 17 & under bracket. Here is a look at some of the top performers.

Philly 3 on 3

Sammy Givens (2008, 6-5 SF)
Sammy seems to play a solid game every time he steps on the court. His pull up game was working well in the championship game. He was solid in the low post and active around the basket. Sammy also ran the floor well and blocked a shot. Sammy isn’t an explosive player, but his is still a pretty quick ball handler who plays hard. He is a fairly capable perimeter shooter, but I would like to see more of that part of his game.

Joe Hill (2008, 6-0 SG)
Joe came up big in the championship game. He hit several three pointers, including a huge one late in the contest. He also ran the floor well and was rewarded with several transition baskets. Joe even showed some surprising athleticism when he blocked a shot attempt.

Larry Loughery (2008, 6-5 SF/PF)
Larry played a solid championship game for Philly 3 on 3. He showed his outside skills as he knocked down a three and a deep two. While Larry loves to battle inside, the more he shows on the perimeter the better offers he’ll wind up with over the summer and fall. He had a nice drive and dish. Larry also came up with a key steal late in the game to help his team to victory. His defense was solid throughout the contest. Larry had an impact around the basket as well, although he was a bit inconsistent finishing.

Team Odom

Ryan Davis (2007, 5-9 PG)
Ryan was certainly the surprise player of the weekend. I knew nothing of his game coming in, but came away quite impressed. The point guard did a very good job of running the offense and blending his own scoring in with it. Ryan is a quick ball handler with a solid crossover move. He’s a drive and dish type point guard, but combines that with a very good pull up mid range jumper. Ryan is also a tough, aggressive defender. He’s listed at 5-9, but is well built and looks and plays bigger than that.

Ryan Pearson (2008, 6-7 SF/PF)
Ryan is a very good inside/outside combo forward. The long-armed Pearson is very active around the basket and is a good finisher. He can score off of offensive rebounds, but also can play with his back to the basket. He loves using the glass on the inside and gets good position. Ryan can score using either hand around the hoop, but prefers his natural hand (left). He isn’t super quick with the ball in his hands, but uses long strides to get to the basket.  He is very good at using head fakes to score around defenders both in the paint and from the outside. Ryan has an effective mid range game and can hit from three as well. He could benefit from a quicker release, but his length allows him to get his shot off from almost anywhere. Ryan is also able to use his height to see over defenders and find cutting teammates. He plays a good all around game, but isn’t dominant in any one area. If he can keep improving, he’ll elevate his stock significantly.

Andrew Gabriel (2007, 6-5 SF/PF)
Andrew put together a solid tournament. He was very active on the boards and in transition. He has a nice built and is quick enough to get into the lane. Andrew had a nice drive to the basket and finished with his left hand. He hit a couple of pull up mid range jumpers throughout the tournament, but overall his jumper was inconsistent. If he ever develops a steady jumper, he’ll draw a lot more interest.

R.J. Evans (2008, 6-2 SG)
Last year when I saw RJ, I thought he was mostly a perimeter shooter. This weekend he actually struggled with his jumper. The big guard was most effective driving at the basket. He can use his body in traffic and finishes fairly well. RJ is a decent ball handler, but not explosive off the dribble. If he could hit his jumper more consistently than he did on this weekend, he’d be a much better prospect.  I'm not sure if it was just an off weekend for him.

Markeys Dean (2007, 6-5 SF/PF)
Markeys is a big bodied forward who is active around the hoop. He finishes fairly well around the hoop and loves to use the glass. He’s capable of getting position deep inside, but doesn’t play much with his back to the basket. Markeys runs the floor well and threw down a nasty left-handed dunk in one game. His ball handling could use some work. Markeys did hit a free throw line jumper, but for the most part didn’t show much of a perimeter game. At his size, he’ll have to play some on the wing at the next level.

Greg Edwards (2009, 6-3 SG)
Greg is a solid young guard. He hit several threes in the semifinal win and also showed a nice pull up mid range game off the dribble. The lanky guard is a decent ball handling too, although he seems to prefer to hang on the perimeter. Greg knocked down a late three in the championship game as well, but it wasn’t enough for Team Odom.

Averon Matthews (2007, 6-11 C)
Averon is a long, thin post player. He plays with his back to the basket and displayed some pretty good quickness in the post. He had some trouble finishing though. Averond didn’t receive many touches on this talented squad either. He has size and length that you can’t teach, but his game does need some work.

Hunting Park 16s

Ferguson Myrick (2009, 6-5 SF/PF)
Prep Charter will reload next year led by an outstanding sophomore class, including Ferguson. He was very impressive throughout the tournament. The young forward can play inside and outside. He has a sweet mid range jumper. He also showed he can finish with both hands around the basket. Ferguson hit a very nice turnaround jumper in the post as well. He’ll play a much bigger role for Prep Charter next season and looks ready to shine.

Tyree "Chuck" Harris (2009, 6-7 PF)
Nothing Chuck does on the court looks pretty. That being said, he’s really quite an effective big man. He has great length, is quick and also fairly athletic. This face up forward is very active around the basket and rebounds well on both ends of the court. He has good hands and can put the ball on the floor and attack. He also showed his unselfishness with a couple of nice passes. Now out of the shadow of the Morris twins, Chuck should have a breakout year next season at Prep Charter.

Jesse Morgan (2009, 6-4 PG)
Jesse had a very solid tournament. He played so well on the high school team for such a young player that I was actually surprised he didn’t dominate his age group more on this weekend. Nevertheless, Jesse helped lead a balanced attack for the championship Hunting Park team. He did a great job of running the offense and getting his teammates involved with some nice passes after breaking down the defense off the dribble. Jesse also hit several difficult pull up jumpers throughout several games.
