Back at the end of August, Virginia Commonwealth received a verbal commitment from Rob Brandenberg out of Lincoln High School in Ohio.  We caught up with Rob recently to discuss his commitment to VCU.

Recruit Recon: How did Coach Coach Smart make VCU seem like the right place for you to continue your basketball career?

Rob Brandenberg:
Well, with all the success VCU has had it made it much easier and him and his staff have a lot of basketball experience as players and coaches.

Recruit Recon: Did you take an official or unofficial visit to the campus?

Rob Brandenberg: I took an official visit.

Recruit Recon: What did you do on your visit?

Rob Brandenberg:
I got a chance to see the campus and i loved it.  I saw the athletic facilities and academic buildings, and got a chance to meet and hang with my future teammates.

Recruit Recon: Did you visit any other schools?

Rob Brandenberg: Well before then I took unofficials to Ohio, Wright State and Akron.
Recruit Recon: When it came down to your final decision what other schools were you considering before committing to VCU?

Rob Brandenberg: My top 5 were VCU, Akron, Wright State, Ohio and Marshall.
Recruit Recon: What were the deciding factors as to why you committed to VCU over these other schools?

Rob Brandenberg: Well VCU is a hot program right now and they play post season basketball which is very important to me.  I also wanted to get out of Ohio and experience something new and VCU fits my playing style, which is up tempo full court basketball.

Recruit Recon: What schools did you have offers from other than VCU?

Rob Brandenberg: Akron, Wright State, Marshall, Ohio, Appalachian State, Loyola (IL), Butler, Western Carolina.

Recruit Recon: When did the VCU coaching staff first see you play and when did they really start recruiting you hard?

Rob Brandenberg: Well they've been recruiting me since April, and they first saw me play at Adidas it takes 5ive in Cincinnati and they offered after that tournament, and been at every tourney I played in July.

Recruit Recon: What are the strengths of your game?

Rob Brandenberg:
Driving, mid range game, my first step, athleticism, and my will to win.

Recruit Recon: What areas of your game do you need to work on the most?

Rob Brandenberg: My shot is good, I shot 48% from three but I can still tend to be streaky.  I have a good handle but I need to work on some more moves to add to my game.

Recruit Recon:  What NBA player, past or present, does your game most resemble?

Rob Brandenberg: A smaller Tracy McGrady, I'm a smooth player (laughs).

Recruit Recon:
Who has had the greatest influence on your basketball career?

Rob Brandenberg: My older brother Reggie Moore, he is 28 and he is the reason why I play the game.  He put a ball in my hands.

Recruit Recon: Who is best player you’ve had to guard?

Rob Brandenberg: JD Weatherspoon (2010, committed to Ohio State)

Recruit Recon: How did you do with that match up?

Rob Brandenberg:
I played him pretty well, he played in the post a lot because I'm 3 inches shorter, but I contained him.

Recruit Recon: Do you know what you are going to major in at VCU?

Rob Brandenberg:
Right now I am thinking about Business Marketing or Education and becoming a school teacher.

Recruit Recon:
Thanks for your time.

Rob Brandenberg:
No problem.
