First round action of the Donofrio Classic continued on Wednesday, with the Classics taking on Lancaster-Lebanon, and Keystone Berks going up against Waterview Dan Rumph.

The evening kicked off with the Waterview Dan Rumph vs. Keystone Berks game.  This was a fairly close contest for most of the game but Keystone Berks eventually pulled away and won by the commanding score of 94-73.

The Classics and Lancaster-Lebanon battled it out in the second game of the evening.  There were lead changes throughout the contest, but when the final buzzer sounded the Classics came out on top by the score of 77-75.

Here are player evaluations from Wednesday’s games.

Classics

Jamil Brown (2010, 6-3 SG)
This was a very impressive performance by Jamil.  He scored in a variety of ways on route to a team high 24 points.  From behind the arc he was able to sink a pair of three pointers.  Jamil has a smooth stroke on his shot but he doesn’t elevate that much when shooting, and his shot selection could have been better.  He took a couple shots from very deep and another where he was very closely defended.  The other jump shot he hit in this contest was from about 12 feet out.

Besides his shooting, Jamil was also able to score off the dribble.  He handles the ball well and was able to get all the way to the hoop and convert with contact.  After driving along the baseline he hit a layup off the glass while being fouled.  On another drive he got into the lane, but when he went up for a short shot he was bumped hard by a defender, which completely turned his body sideways.  Despite this contact he still managed to get the shot up and it hit nothing but the bottom of the net.  Jamil also made a couple plays using his athleticism.  On one of his teammates misses he grabbed to ball and threw it down with two hands before hitting the ground.  Defensively he swatted a shot attempt straight out of bound and he also rebounded well from the wing.

Whis Grant (2010, 5-11 PG/SG)
Whis is quick off the dribble and can drive with either hand.  The defense had a had time staying in front of him due to his speed, and his use of dribble hesitation moves and a deadly crossover.  While on the attack he did a nice job of balancing his passing and his scoring.  His passes were crisp and he created a number of scoring opportunities for his teammate, but he left his feet too often.  Leaving his feet did not cause any problems in this game, but with tighter defense this could result in turnovers.  Most of the times he took it all the way to the hoop himself, he completely just beat his man giving him an open layup.  Although he can drive with both hands Whis only attempted to finish with his right hand, even from the left hand side of the basket.  He converted on an open layup like this but when a defender was closer he ended up missing.  Other than his ability to attack the hoop, Whis also inflicted damage with his jump shot.  He hit a pull up from 15 feet out, as well as a long two pointer and a trio of threes.  One of the three pointers he hit was from NBA range, which tied the game up at 75 with under a minute to play.  Whis finished the game with 21 points.

Lancaster-Lebanon

Leontae Turner (2010, 6-1 SG)
Leontae demonstrated his outside shooting ability by knocking down four shots from beyond the arc.  Besides his perimeter shooting he also scored on a runner and tipped in a teammates miss.

Vince Soto (2011)
Vince is a small, thin guard but he does have good quickness.  He hit some shots from the outside, knocking down a deep two and a three pointer.  On one drive he missed a runner but got his own rebound and laid it in.  Vince also scored moving without the ball.  After cutting along the baseline, he found himself open under the hoop for an easy layup.

Keystone Berks

Jon Angstadt (2011, 6-1 SG)
Jon had a game high 34 points and he scored in a number of different ways.  His jump shot was on as he hit numerous shots from behind the arc as well as a pull up mid range jumper.  He shot the ball with confidence and he has a quick release.  When driving to the hoop, he took it in strong and was able to finish in traffic.  Jon was blocked a couple times but he also drew some fouls.  When he went to the line he knocked down his free throw attempts.

Donovan Jack (2012, 6-7 PF)
Donovan is a long but thin forward who was able to score around the hoop.  His points were either scored from the post or after pulling down offensive rebounds.  Out of the post he hit a couple hook shots, but missed a put back dunk later in the game.  Defensively Donovan did not block any shots but he did alter quite a few.

Jereme Good (2010, 6-6 SF/PF)
Jereme played a bit of an inside/outside game but he was definitely more successful playing out on the wing.  When posting up he struggled to convert and even airballed a hook shot.  However he did rebound the ball well.  From the outside he hit a three pointer as well as a pair of jumpers from just inside the arc.  He also hit a pull up jumper from a step over the free throw line.  Jereme did not put the ball on the floor a whole lot, but he did use an effective spin move on one occasion to get around his defender.  He attempted a tough layup as a result of the spin but could not get it to fall.

Waterview Dan Rumph

Andre Thomas (2010, 6-6 SF/PF)
Andre scored 14 points in this contest with most of his points coming off of layups and put backs after grabbing offensive boards.  His most impressive play of the night was a put back dunk.
