Oklahoma guard Calvin Newell to leave program
Friday, 02 December 2011

CalvinNewell2010.jpgSports Net Oklahoma: Oklahoma's second-leading scorer says he's leaving the team.

Calvin Newell, who is averaging 13 points per game for the 4-and-1 Sooners this season, says family issues have distracted him and he needs to get back closer to home.

"I like this team a lot and I know they'll do well," Newell said. "I'll be cheering them on."

The sophomore from Philadelphia scored 19 points in the season opener against Idaho State and also led the team with 18 points in a win over Washington State last week at the 76 Classic in Anaheim, California.

"We'll definitely miss Calvin," said head coach Lon Kruger. "He's been a key contributor this season and a guy who's scored the basketball for us. However, I respect his decision and the issues he's facing, and certainly wish him the best."

Oklahoma plays Sacramento State Friday night in Norman.
