Wagner's hiring of Bashir Mason keeps job in the family

ImageSILive: In the end, Wagner College hired from within.

The decision to offer the Seahawk head-coaching position to 28-year-old two-year assistant Bashir Mason, which was made this weekend, is rooted in the heady success of the past season and the school administration’s belief that Mason can replicate that result in the future.

Wagner was a school record-setting 25-6 this season, and with four players returning from that team a primary goal was to continue the momentum built by Dan Hurley over the last two years.

“We have a foundation here, and Bashir’s coaching and recruiting has been a part of it,” athletic director Walt Hameline said Sunday night of his new head coach, the 17th in school history and the youngest currently coaching men’s basketball at the Division I level. “He has the experience of working with our players and with a winning program, and that’s the kind of experience that we thought was important.”
