Richmond Times-Dispatch: Former Navy basketball standout J.J. Avila will spend 2012-13 at South Texas College, a junior college in his hometown of McAllen, Texas, he said Wednesday. Avila, a 6-foot-7 forward who was the 2011 Patriot League rookie of the year and averaged 15.9 points and 7.2 rebounds as a sophomore, then plans to switch to the University of Richmond for his remaining two years of school and two seasons of eligibility.
Avila was removed from the Navy team Feb. 2 because of undisclosed violations of academy rules, and he resigned from the academy a week later. He committed to UR in April.
He will not spend a redshirt year at UR "because some of my classes didn't transfer from the Naval Academy, so my (grade point average) wasn't high enough to transfer immediately," Avila said. "I need to take these four classes each semester, and keep above a 2.0 (GPA), hopefully higher, so I can go over to Richmond the following year and have enough stability in my GPA."
