New York Daily News: Manhattan College’s basketball program, coming off a 21-win season in Steve Masiello’s first year as head coach in Riverdale, got a major talent injection Friday when Ashton Pankey decided on Manhattan as his destination after transferring from Maryland.

The 6-9, 230-pound Pankey, who started 17 games and averaged 4.7 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Terps last season, said he wanted to be closer to home due to a personal family matter.

“It’s a personal situation with my mom and I want to be near here to support her and help her out,” Pankey told the Daily News. “So now I’ll only be about 15 or 20 minutes away from her anytime if she needs me. I feel better being closer to home.”

Pankey grew up in the Crotona Park section of the Bronx.
