Bates-Diop, ranked No. 27 in his class by and No. 20 by, had been one of the hottest targets on the recruiting trail since a breakout summer during which he emerged as the star of the 16U Illinois Wolves AAU team.

The 6-7, 190-pound Bates is "has really nice touch and a high release point," according to "He also is very long, which makes it very hard for guys who would be guarding him block or alter his shot. Combine that with a good vertical and he has a great outside presence."

Bates-Diop told Scout his decision to sign with Thad Matta's team involved a lot of little things. “I really liked the coaching staff and the people on my visit. I was just very comfortable there.”
